The women of the New York City Ballet are not schooled in Swan Lake style. George Balanchine never set the full-length ballet, believing it was nonsense. He did, however, choreograph a one-act ode to Odette—and even that version scared his ballerinas. Still, Swan Lake is a winner at the box office and Peter Martins brought this 1996 production, which he created for the Royal Danish Ballet, into NYCB repertory in 1999. Among the NYCB principal women taking on the double role of Odette-Odile is Lauren Lovette, whose debut a few years back in The Sleeping Beauty was thrilling—musically, technically, and theatrically rounded. Now Lovette has her chance at Swan Lake, on February 21 and 23 (matinee). On February 17 and 22 (matinee), the indelible Tiler Peck takes the lead. —L.J.
