Suspension/Stillness

Dec 8, 2021 – Mar 13, 2022
Pl. de la Maison Carrée, 30000 Nîmes, France

Think suspension and stillness in art and Alexander Calder comes to mind, those aerial sculptures that seem hung on a thread, floating in time. But there are other artists who make space for pause and contemplation. Etel Adnan creates evocative landscapes with torn bolts of color that transfix. Charlotte Posenenske builds masterful sculptures with brash geometric blocks. And a certain calm emanates from the paintings and installations of Lili Dujourie, Trisha Donnelly, and Susan Frecon. This exhibition brings together these five artists from different generations, each in her own way arresting us for a moment, making us still. —E.C.
