Stephen Shore

555 W 21st Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

“Fishing, like photography, is an art that calls forth intelligence, concentration, and delicacy,” wrote the New York City-born photographer Stephen Shore in his 1982 book, Uncommon Places. Shore’s work is various, shifting from black and white to color, and from analog to digital. His subjects and scale have also varied, as has his platform—Shore began making on-demand books in the 1990s and started an Instagram presence in 2014. Whatever he’s doing, Shore makes sure to respect natural light and to be precise. In 2020, he began a new series of drone shots, taking aerial photographs of rural and suburban landscapes. Titled “Topographies,” the series expands upon his large-scale landscape photographs from the 1970s. In both, Shore explores deeply rooted American qualities. —Jeanne Malle
