It’s difficult to write about work by the late conceptual artist Stanley Brouwn: for decades, he told curators, gallerists, and museums that he didn’t want his work to be reproduced. Brouwn was born in 1935 in Paramaribo, the overpopulated capital of the smallest country in South America, Suriname. He moved to Amsterdam at 24, in 1957, and quickly met Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, captivated by their ZERO movement. His 1961 conceptual piece, This Way Brouwn, became well known, and he exhibited at Documenta 5, 6 and 7, and at the 1982 Venice Biennale. Still, Brouwn was conspicuously absent at most exhibitions, where the catalogues frequently contained the sentence “At the request of the artist, no bibliographical information is provided here.” In 2017, Brouwn died at 81. To honor his wishes, curators of this retrospective have practiced restraint. To find out what the deal is, you’ll have to go. —Elena Clavarino
