Helen Pashgian’s last solo show in New York City, back in 1971, was described in reviews as “California art.” While this may sound innocent, coming from East Coast critics in the 1970s it was anything but. Pashgian’s minimalism, inspired by West Coast surf, sand, and atmosphere, was all light, immaterial. Thirty years later, Pashgian—a leader of the 1960s Light and Space art movement—finally has another solo show in New York City. With industrial epoxies and plastics, Pashgian has created new sphere-shaped monochrome light sculptures—“presences,” she calls them—that interact with each other and create shifting perceptions within the gallery space. —J.D.
