Like so many countries at the beginning of the 20th century, Sweden’s industrialization ushered in an era of social reform and optimism. Just as the French painted bathers on the banks of the Seine, flanked by factories in the distance, so Swedish landscape painters documented a similar crop of new industry. This exhibition of 100 works explores Swedish modernism from the 1900s to the 1940s. The title “Pink Sails” comes from a 1934 Ragnar Sandberg painting of two sailboats crossing the river at dusk, tinged with pink light. —Elena Clavarino
