No matter one’s stance on monarchy, there’s nothing like a coronation. My sister, who couldn’t give a fig about the royal family, was up before dawn last May 6 so she could hear Handel’s Zadok the Priest, the British anthem that celebrates the anointing of a new English king or queen (in fact, she threw a neighborhood party). For those who want more, the coronation outfits worn by Their Majesties are now on display in the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace. Among the highlights: Charles and Camilla’s splendid Robes of Estate. His was worn by his great-grandfather King George V and grandfather King George VI. Hers was newly made and is embroidered with floral emblems of the U.K. plus 20 other plants, not to mention bees, butterflies, a beetle, and a caterpillar. Also on view is the Anointing Screen (it is embroidered with a tree bearing 56 leaves—the member countries of the Commonwealth) and a variety of coronation vestments. —Laura Jacobs
