Pierre Soulages, Simon Hantaï, Antoni Tàpies, and Jorge Eielson were all born within five years of one another, between 1919 and 1924, and they all lived in postwar Paris in the 1940s. None of them conformed to the artistic movements coursing through the mid century. While they were influenced by Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, each set out to find his own form of expression and abstraction, his own relationship with paint and other materials. This group exhibition focuses on four unique visions within the postwar art world. —E.C.
