Reviewing Sir Mark Elder’s recording of Mahler’s epic Ninth Symphony with the Hallé Orchestra, Manchester, in 2015, Gramophone noted that while the ensemble had “Mahlerian roots more deeply embedded than its London rivals,” the conductor was perhaps not “immediately recognizable as a dyed-in-the-wool Mahlerian.” Okay, but specialization is not everything. Our ears pricked up when the critic further observed that Elder’s “cool, clear, carefully ordered” delivery of Mahler’s vast exploratory opening and closing movements brought to mind “Klimt rather than Schiele.” Close your eyes and see. —Matthew Gurewitsch
