Limbs often inspire Shahryar Nashat’s sculptures and videos. “Framed away from the rest of the body, they question it,” Nashat has said, “while also allowing some psychological distance from the notion of persona.” For his latest exhibition, Nashat has pushed that idea further with a juxtaposition that tests the limits of what counts as a limb. An image of decaying flesh, preserved inside a vitrine, is displayed alongside a rock with digitally carved varicose veins. The items are arranged as if the analog and digital technologies are prosthetic limbs. —Jensen Davis
