Every decade, someone in the art world boldly declares, “Painting is dead.” Yet the medium endures, evolving alongside technology. Fifty years ago, Andy Warhol pioneered the fusion of digital techniques with oil painting, resulting in grainy, computer-generated images. Today, artists like Sarah Sze push the boundaries further by incorporating materials such as string, wire, and stones into traditional canvas work, challenging our perceptions of time, space, and the painted surface. This exhibition in Chicago brings together works by 60 artists—painting, video, and performance—in its exploration of a central question: What makes a painting in the age of technology? —Elena Clavarino
