Notoriety used to mean “the state of being famous or well known for some bad quality or deed.” But today, post-Warhol (“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”) every selfie is a potential catapult into stardom, and notoriety is as good as celebrity. An exhibition that spans three centuries of the public’s obsession with who’s in the spotlight—positive or negative—contains works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, George Hurrell, Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, John Baldessari, and many more. —J.V.
