Nicholas McGegan—music director of San Francisco’s Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra and Chorale for 34 years and now music director emeritus—has always been a partitioner of sparkling spirit. There’s sure to be pixie dust up his sleeve for Mendelssohn’s overture and incidental music to Shakespeare’s most perfect comedy. Fans of Balanchine’s full-length ballet will be delighted to hear Mendelssohn’s overture to The Fair Melusine, as well, which Balanchine spliced in for 12 thrillingly dramatic minutes at the heart of his celestial adaptation. And the women’s voices briefly required for Mendelssohn’s setting of the lullaby from the play get an extra moment to shine in Three Motets, op. 39, inspired by the late-Renaissance beauty of Trinità dei Monti, atop Rome’s Spanish Steps. —Matthew Gurewitsch
