“Art is a disruptive and propulsive force,” explains the filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma). “Creative expression is one of the most powerful tools that we can employ to activate and ignite change.” To honor Black citizens who have lost their lives at the hands of the police, DuVernay has partnered with 13 talented African artists for this group exhibition. Nigerian artist Oluwole Omofemi created nine paintings, each addressing one of the nine heartbreaking sentences uttered by George Floyd during his murder. Dennis Osakue presents a striking painted portrait of Angela Davis. And the Nobel-winning Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai is powerfully portrayed by Taiye Erewele. —E.C.
