Sarah Bernhardt is the stuff of myths and legends. She was known as the “Divine Sarah,” the “sacred monster,” and the woman with the “golden voice.” Bernhardt made her stage debut in the 1860s, and although she’d had a humble upbringing she quickly rose to stardom. Perhaps it was due to her tall, slender figure, which was unusual in that era. Or perhaps it was her theatrics—she was known to sleep in a coffin. Bernhardt was friends with city greats such as Gustave Doré, Victor Hugo, and Louise Abbéma. She died in 1923. This exhibition, keyed to the centenary of her death, includes photographs, paintings, film, and objects from the actress’s private life. —Elena Clavarino
