Sanford Biggers: Soft Truths

Oct 30 – Dec 12, 2020
507 W 24th St, New York, NY 10011, United States

The Harlem-based interdisciplinary artist Sanford Biggers challenges preconceptions by mobilizing popular imagery. “There’s always this embedded, implicit sociality in the material he uses,” said his friend and fellow artist Julie Mehretu, “and in what he’s investigating.” In this exhibition, Biggers investigates classical sculpture. Does our understanding of Greco-Roman and African sculpture change when these relics are removed from their original context? Biggers answers with “Chimeras,” a sculptural series in marble that mixes African and European symbols. These vestiges of the past speak to our multicultural present. —E.C.
