In Sun Ra’s 1972 poem, “The Satellites are Spinning,” he speaks from space: “Oh the galaxies are waiting / For planet Earth’s awakening / Oh we sing this song / to a brave tomorrow. / Oh we sing this song / to abolish sorrow.” The late jazz keyboardist and Afrofuturist philosopher’s vision of a radically kinder hereafter is felt all the more urgently in light of the murders of George Floyd and countless others. This exhibition combines video of artist Rudy Shepherd’s performance of his own Induction Ceremony—in which he plays a role inspired by Sun Ra and his unrealized dreams for the future—with Shepherd’s “Portraits” series, an ongoing project that aims to humanize and commemorate the lives lost, or harmed, by the police state. —C.J.F.
