As the centennial of Roy Lichtenstein’s birthday approaches—he was born on October 27, 1923—Gagosian is exhibiting his distinctive Pop art sculptures, among the most recognizable sculptures in history. The work studies for these iconic pieces employed methods of fine painting and printmaking, and they are themselves worthy of institutional attention. Hence, the exhibition at Gagosian’s 980 Madison location includes both sculptures and related studies. The show is curated by none other than Irving Blum, a Pop art icon in his own right, known as the first gallerist to show Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Cans” series. As the actor Steve Martin writes, in an essay in the exhibition’s catalogue, “Roy and Irving: A bad name for a ’60s folk duo, but a great name for a powerful art combo.” —Lucy Horowitz
