In the 1980s and 90s, Robert Rauschenberg had a hope: that art could aid in world peace. The Texas-born artist set up ROCI—the Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange—and visited countries where he thought a dialogue was needed. During the project’s five years, Rauschenberg sent exhibitions to 11 countries (China, Tibet, the Soviet Union, and Malaysia among them). Each country’s ROCI show featured original works inspired by the place. At Ely House, in London, Rauschenberg’s global ambitions are now on display, with ROCI’s different focus countries finally in conversation with one another. —Zack Hauptman
