Richard Serra understood steel. As a teenager, he worked in the steel mills to earn money for college, where he first studied English literature, and then moved on to visual art and art history. In 1964, he left Yale with an M.F.A. and went to Paris; there he studied the work of Brâncuși, and began sculpting in rubber, lead, and fiberglass. Serra died in 2024, and is known for his monumental and sometimes controversial sculptures in steel. But his interest in mass, volume, and weight is also apparent in his print-making practice, which saw him exploring dense, saturated black. This exhibition of late prints draws from two series: “Notebook Drawings” and “Hitchcock.” They are pure Serra—fierce and fearless. —Maggie Turner
