Rhye: Home

Streaming on Spotify

In 2012, Rhye, a musician whom no one had heard of, released two beautifully directed music videos on YouTube, which went viral. The erotic yet melancholy clips matched the diaphanous and artfully produced songs, which were synthy and slow and ultra-sexy, melodies rolling gracefully, heightened by horns, into a chorus of exquisite prettiness. The lyrics, sung by a woman with a soft and sensual voice, were full of longing. Everyone wanted to know: Who’s Rhye? In February of 2013, the Times revealed Rhye to be a duo: Mike Milosh, a native of Toronto and the group’s vocalist, and Robin Hannibal, a Danish songwriter and producer. Since then, the band has released four albums building on its electro pop and jazz roots—the fifth is out this month—but the band is at its best when it returns to the defining feature of the first two singles: a delicate tug at the heartstrings. —C.J.F.
