On February 12, 1967, 24 Sussex police officers interrupted a small party at Redlands, a property in West Wittering owned by Keith Richards. They were armed with a search warrant and allegations of drug use—which, to no one’s surprise, was confirmed. Richards, Mick Jagger, and their friend Robert Fraser were charged with drug offenses while Marianne Faithful, Jagger’s girlfriend at the time, faced tabloid scrutiny due to reports that she greeted the police wearing nothing but a fur rug. Luckily, the Stones knew Michael Havers, a successful lawyer and future attorney general. And even he didn’t go unscathed—his relationship with his own son, the aspiring actor Nigel Havers, was scrutinized when it was discovered that Nigel was part of Faithful’s social circle. The bizarre case became a media sensation, reflecting the generational clash and psychedelic fervor of the 1960s. It has now been adapted for the stage by the British playwright Charlotte Jones, and the premiere production features Jasper Talbot as Jagger, Brenock O’Connor as Richards, and Emer McDaid as Faithful. —Jeanne Malle
