Rachel Martin, who grew up between California and the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, in Montana, began drawing at a very early age. The year she turned three, her mother asked her to pencil in the face of a bug. “I remember her saying to me,” Martin told ARTnews last month, “show me how it feels to look at it, rather than how it looks, and I think that’s how I make art now.” Today, living in Queens, New York, Martin creates powerful drawings and sculptures that explore her Indigenous identity—subjects include food-gathering practices, self-sustainability, and community. This show presents 15 new works on paper. —Elena Clavarino
