Robert Crumb was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He’s a cartoonist, illustrator, and writer who played a significant role in the 1960s “underground comix” movement. The movement’s purpose was to give comic illustrators the freedom to follow their inspiration without being restricted to the guidelines of mainstream comics. They often focused on current events in a satirical vein. After founding Zap Comix, Crumb contributed to the East Village Other as well as several other publications, published a magazine called Weirdo, did books, album covers, and collaborations with other artists. He is now 82. This exhibition focuses on drawings and prints from the last several years—Crumb’s contemplations of old age, his artistic journey, and the paranoia that many are experiencing from political unrest around the world. —Henry McGrath
