Robert Russell and Lisa Edelstein: A Palace in Time

Years before they wed, in 2014, Lisa Edelstein and Robert Russell were already established artists. Their marriage only strengthened them creatively. Edelstein was born to a Jewish family in Boston, and rose to prominence as an actress on the television series House. During the pandemic, however, she took to painting to reconnect with her spiritual heritage. “I definitely don’t lean away from my Jewish roots,” Edelstein told Forbes in 2022. “They are in my bones, literally. And, therefore, they are in my paintings.” Russell, who defines his style as “conceptual realism,” paints with a similar philosophy. Ordinary objects like cups are transformed through careful attention. A new exhibition ties their work together, illustrating a portrait of shared Jewish life that evokes memories of joy and loss. Between Russell’s still lifes of Jewish objects and Edelstein’s paintings inspired by her own upbringing, the two offer a look inside their own “palace in time,” transformed by their faith. —Maggie Turner
