The sculptor Giuseppe Penone, a pioneer of Italy’s Arte Povera movement, is known for his stripped and skeletal trees in copper, stone, and wire, and his explorations with rocks and bark. Few, however, are familiar with Penone’s creations in ceramic. In 2013, he spent time in Sèvres, working with world-class porcelain manufacturers. During his sojourn there, he created 11 discs by hand. They are white and have been etched with lilting concentric circles, much like the growth rings found in tree trucks. Penone left a fingerprint in each. These delicate pieces are shown alongside 18th-century porcelain from the Frick’s holdings. This is the first time ceramics by Penone have ever been on view. —Elena Clavarino
