Private Lives: Home and Family in the Art of the Nabis, Paris, 1889–1900

July 1 – Sept 19, 2021
11150 East Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA

The spiritual brotherhood that called itself the Nabis—Arabic for “prophets”—was founded in the late 19th century by the French artist Paul Sérusier. The group was influenced by the Symbolist movement and the exotic works of Paul Gauguin, and included such rising stars as Édouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, Félix Vallotton, and the young Pierre Bonnard. In fact, the four formed a close friendship. Though their works differed greatly, all looked to home life for inspiration, and painted the hidden truths of romance, love, and family. This exhibition focuses on the group’s powerful depictions of gardens, interiors, and hidden places within Paris. —E.C.
