Monuments

The Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Baltimore, Maryland, before its removal in 2017.

Regarding monuments, there’s a misconception that they will stand forever, as have the stoic marbles of Ancient Rome. Most don’t survive the march of history. Politics and discourse change, and so do the figures that populate our cities. This exhibition at MOCA looks at monuments from the post–Civil War era that were recently decommissioned after two shocking events: 2015’s racially motivated mass shooting at the Mother Emanuel Church, in Charleston; and the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which ended in bloodshed. The monuments, some unmarred and others heavily vandalized, will be paired with specially commissioned artworks by Kara Walker, Martin Puryear, Hank Willis Thomas, and others. —Elena Clavarino
