Dance photography has an illustrious history. It has moved from the posed positions of the late 19th century—poeticized images that capture the essence of a dance—to the action photography of the 20th, split seconds of the dance performance itself. Photographers Ken Browar and Deborah Ory capture today’s dancers in the air, as if they were elemental—energy classically-trained and crystalline. In the 50 or so photographs on view here, the energy is also couture. Dressed in stunning vintage and modern gowns, the dancers leap and twirl like supermodels from Mount Olympus. —L.J.
