For the Marseille-born artist Pierre Dunoyer, studies in architecture and psychopathology kickstarted a career in painting. In 1978, soon after he graduated, Dunoyer showed in small group exhibitions in Paris, and in 1980 he was part of a bigger show, “Tendances de l’art en France 1968–1978, III: Partis-pris autres.” Dunoyer’s style is rigorous: he often creates paintings of identical dimensions using six primary colors. The idea is to create “paintings of thoughts,” he has said, which have “no other ambition than to be there.” In this exhibition, 14 of these captivating canvases are shown close together in chronological order, going from 1978 to 2022—an extremely disciplined form of retrospective. —Elena Clavarino
