Many an artist has addressed the emotional and psychological power of motherhood. Dorothea Lange gave us Migrant Mother, her shy children pressed against her tense shoulders. Louise Bourgeois sculpted giant spiders, creatures she called Maman, a nod to her own mother’s towering presence. In this exhibition, contemporary artists reimagine representations of motherhood, taking into account generational shifts in family and gender roles. Works from the last two decades, as well as significant pieces from pioneers, portray an evolving iconography. —E.C.
