Isabella Stewart Gardner, a prominent art collector, achieved celebrity status when she opened her own public museum in 1903 in Boston. The “Queen of Back Bay,” however, hated to be photographed. As she said in 1915, “I am never photographed, unless by some Kodak fiend, who does it on the sly, and without my permission.” When Gardner did allow herself to be captured on camera, it was by an artist she trusted. Such images were as carefully curated as her own galleries. In order to illustrate the life of its founder, the museum brings together a series of photographs from Gardner’s girlhood and travels, images that range from candid to posed pictures. —Maggie Turner
