One can’t argue that Pablo Picasso’s Cubist period is understudied. But in 1910, the artist received a decorative commission in Brooklyn, and the work he did for this commission has never had a dedicated exhibition. Until now. Picasso was asked by the artist, collector, and critic Hamilton Easter Field to adorn his home library with murals. It would be the first time Picasso abandoned the easel for the wall. And it was just as he was experimenting with abstraction and the figure. Field died before Picasso had finished creating the library panels, and the Field residence was ultimately demolished. Nevertheless, the commission was a catalyst for Picasso’s launch into Cubism, and for the first time the six works he created for Field’s home are on view together. —Clara Molot
