“If you don’t know what to do, there’s actually a chance of doing something new,” writes Philip Glass in Words Without Music: A Memoir (2015). “As long as you know what you’re doing, nothing much of interest is going to happen.” These are words to live by. Glass has one of the most distinctive sounds ever in classical music, yet he’s always pushing into places where he won’t sound like Philip Glass. Songs and Poems I & II were premiered in 2007 and 2010 respectively. Glass’s love of Bach was the starting point, but Songs and Poems I also drew inspiration from the acclaimed cellist Wendy Sutter. Here at the Crypt, Sutter will perform both partitas. There are three performances and the third is already sold out, so don’t delay. —Laura Jacobs
