Peter Schlesinger: France 1969–1979

Peter Schlesinger, The dock at La Piscine Deligny, Paris, 1975.

Oct 15 – Nov 25, 2023
50 Rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris, France

The Parisian gallery Mariposa opens its doors with an exhibition of photography by Peter Schlesinger, images snapped during his fabulous travels in France. At 18, the California native enrolled in a painting course at UCLA, taught by David Hockney. The two men fell in love. After graduation, Schlesinger followed Hockney to London; he attended art school and was part of the city’s haute bohemian scene. On trips to France from 1969 to 1979, Schlesinger captured colorful moments of his glamorous existence: Robert Mapplethorpe leaving a camera shop on the Boulevard Saint-Germain (1971), Grace Coddington strolling down Rue de Rivoli the same year she began at American Vogue (1972), Andy Warhol and Rex Reed in a taxi in Monaco (1974), Paloma Picasso and Tina Chow at Paloma’s wedding, in Paris (1978). This will be the first exhibition of Schlesinger’s photography in Europe. —Clara Molot
