When the pandemic took hold in March 2020, the artist Peter Kuper was just starting his tenure as the Jean Strouse Fellow at the New York Public Library. The library closed to the public, and Kuper found himself wandering its Beaux-Arts halls and galleries alone. During those long, lonely, exploratory days he came up with the premise for his new graphic novel. It pays homage to insects, the underappreciated creatures upon which our ecosystems depend. This exhibition sees Kuper curating the entomological treasures he discovered in the library’s archives, while tracing the evolution of insects over 400 million years. —E.C.
