The Cherry Lane Theater is going through a renaissance. First established in 1923, the playhouse premiered works from artists like Gertrude Stein and Sam Shepherd, and became known as “the Birthplace of Off-Broadway.” Last year, after a lengthy hiatus, the Commerce Street mainstay reopened its doors. It returns this year with two productions on its fall slate, running concurrently. First is School Pictures, a musical performed by the writer Milo Cramer, who muses on the endless struggles of puberty in the New York school system. Next up is Two Girls, a premiere that dissects an infamous millennial porn video to examine sexual taboo, the female body, and the broader internet culture. It’s by Eliya Smith, 28, a rising star for her complex displays of adolescent female friendship. Both kick off this Wednesday. —Maggie Turner
