After moving from Paris to New York City, in 1975, the French fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier worked at Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, shot advertising campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior, and captured intimate portraits of Princess Diana, Kate Moss, and Cindy Crawford. And yet he insisted that the best portrait he ever made was of his dog. “The dog is the perfect portrait subject,” he explained. “He doesn’t pose. He isn’t aware of the camera.” This tendency towards the informal and the spontaneous goes to the heart of Demarchelier’s work. In response to his recent death, the Atlas Gallery honors Demarchelier’s role in elevating fashion photography into the realm of art. —Paulina Prosnitz
