“The Americas are a cosmos,” the Venezuelan artist Oswaldo Vigas explained. “Our continent is full of dark signs and warnings: telluric signs and magic that are deep components of our condition. The intention of my painting is to reach them, interpret them, and translate them into new warnings.” Taking inspiration from his Mestizo heritage, while also pulling from Venezuelan antiquity and from European modern art, Vigas’s abstract works are a cultural archive in which different worlds meet. —Clara Molot
