Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando (1928), a modernist chronicle of gender fluidity, begins in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, where the young hero is a page. At the age of 30, he goes to sleep one night and wakes up a woman. Living for another 300 years, Orlando witnesses history while moving between male and female. A New York Times review at the time of the book’s publication said that Woolf was exploring “still another fourth dimension of writing.” The year 1992 brought forth a gorgeous film adaptation, with Tilda Swinton as Orlando. This year, a new adaptation by the British director and writer Neil Bartlett has taken the stage. Emma Corrin, most recently seen in the film Lady Chatterley’s Lover, stars in the title role. The esteemed Michael Grandage directs. —Jensen Davis
