Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo has made the most of his peripatetic career. From his years dancing with the Nederlands Dans Theater and the Stuttgart Ballet, the Spanish émigré has absorbed existential seriousness. From his long tenure with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comes a bodily wholesomeness: undulant spine, responsive arms, grounded stance. The effect of these dual influences is an earned melancholy. Debuting at the Pacific Northwest Ballet after a Covid-induced delay of four years, his capacious One Thousand Pieces takes inspiration from Marc Chagall’s 1977 American Windows, a stained-glass vision of America in deep, luminous blue. The music is by Philip Glass. Filling out the program is Ballet X founder Matthew Neenan’s smart, sharp, and funny Bacchus, the perfect chaser. —Apollinaire Scherr
