When we think of Oedipus we tend to think of Freud and the complex he coined. But we shouldn’t forget that the Greek ruler’s tragic story is rooted in a prophecy: He will murder his father and marry his mother. In Robert Icke’s adaptation, Oedipus is reimagined as a contemporary politician. The ill-fated statesman vows to reveal the whole truth about his past, but the decision works against him. The political thriller stars Mark Strong and Lesley Manville, both of whom grow stronger with each scene. “An old play is masterfully analyzed,” the critic Arifa Akbar has written, “and made newly devastating.” Icke directs the production, which was performed in Amsterdam in 2018, at the Edinburgh Festival in 2019, and now transfers to the West End. —Jeanne Malle
