The Chicago artist Nick Cave trained as a dancer with Alvin Ailey, then moved on to create extravagant wearable sculptures—“soundsuits,” he calls them—part Mardi Gras, part totem, part camouflage, part dreamscape. Cave’s first “soundsuit” dates back to 1992, when the police beating of Rodney King caused uproar across the nation. He covered a simple hooded silhouette with sticks and twigs, which to his delight made peculiar sounds when the garment was worn. His brother, Jack, is a fashion designer too. “We grew up learning,” Nick has explained, “being immersed in making things out of nothing.” With the couture-quality fashions in this exhibition, the Cave brothers pay tribute to Black aesthetics. Imagine the Ebony Fashion Fair, New York Ball culture, and Black cinema all rolled into one comprehensive show. —Elena Clavarino
