This summer, the Jewish Museum presents a show conceived and curated by the eminent art historian Germano Celant, who died in 2020 at age 79. The exhibition focuses on a three-year period that was extremely fertile, both culturally and artistically, in New York City. At that time the museum was directed by Alan Solomon, and his vision provides a jumping-off point. The artists featured here responded to the fast-changing world with a new energy—sometimes anarchy—and the show’s large roster includes Diane Arbus, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, Faith Ringgold, and Andy Warhol. —Clara Molot
