In 2019, the Beijing-based artist Liu Xiaodong told the Art Newspaper that he tries to “look at local cultures, but not as a tourist. It is a way to understand each place’s local life, a way to enter its society.” Known for his figurative paintings, Liu has depicted rural and urban China, Greenland, Tibet, and Cuba. His preparation for a project sees him spending one or two months in a new locale, where every night, to seal in the sights of the day, he records his thoughts in a diary before sleeping. In this exhibition, Liu once again takes on London, this time depicting the young Chinese professionals who are shaping the city—from a young executive banker to the first Chinese polo player in the British league. Like many of his shows, a documentary film will accompany the exhibition, as will the artist’s diary, penned during his research phase. —C.J.F.
