Netflix's "BEEF": Special Screening and Conversation

Charles Melton, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Cailee Spaeny in the second season of Beef.

In the opening scenes of Beef, a desolate-looking Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) is at a home improvement store, trying to decide whether he should keep the three gas stoves and a carbon monoxide device he bought earlier. In the parking lot, he swerves his ramshackle truck toward a fancy white car, which belongs to the prim and successful Amy Lau (Ali Wong). She gives him the finger, and he chases her in a fit of road rage. The showdown culminates with Amy almost crashing into Danny’s car. What ensues is a long and ridiculous feud—a “beef.” It’s a symptom of their unhappiness that whenever something goes wrong in their personal lives, they are somehow back at each other’s throats. One of the best things on Netflix today, the first season of Lee Sung Jin’s Beef was a fast-paced dark comedy that was as funny as it was awkward. A new season is now arriving, led by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. They play a married couple at a country club whose very public argument is witnessed by two younger employees (Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton), setting off a game of favors and coercion with the club’s billionaire owner (Youn Yuh-jung) at the center. The 92nd Street Y is screening the first two episodes, followed by a conversation with the cast and creative team. All eight episodes drop the same day on Netflix—but seeing them live should be more fun. —Jeanne Malle
