“What does it mean to break something,” asks the artist Nari Ward, “and what endures after that is broken?” The Jamaican-American Ward constructs sculptures out of found objects, giving new life to items that most see as unremarkable or worthless. When he heads into a project or an exhibition that showcases old work, he must sometimes dismantle his larger pieces, then build them back up with new additions. Ward also creates films and paintings. This retrospective in Milan includes an enormous floor installation that acts as a centerpiece; it was created using thousands of concrete bricks. “Ground Break” features numerous performances by the artist Justin Randolph Thompson, all of which are carried out on top of Ward’s art. —Zack Hauptman
