The American photographer Nan Goldin once explained her work as coming from need—“a need to remember everything.” Her seminal work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, first exhibited in the 1985 Whitney Biennial, is a slideshow set to music, a visual memoir recounting domestic abuse, drug use, and the ravages of the AIDS crisis. It forces viewers to remember what they might wish to forget. “Sirens”—Goldin’s first solo show in London in over a decade—presents past works and new projects, including Memory Lost, a montage of archival images, set to an original score, that illustrates the effect of drugs on both present states of mind and the act of remembering. —C.J.F.
