Nalini Malani: Can You Hear Me?

Dec 23, 2020 – Sept 5, 2021
77-82 Whitechapel High St, Shadwell, London E1 7QX, United Kingdom

“Image dances all around, projected at unsettling angles, like distorting shadows from a central fire,” writes Hettie Judah in The Guardian. “You can imagine them scratched on to a cave wall.” She’s describing Nalini Malani’s installation Can You Hear Me?, at London’s famed Whitechapel Gallery. It was the violent death of a child in India that inspired Malani to illuminate walls with constantly changing layers of color, light, and text (Lawrence Ferlinghetti: “Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced and whose bigots haunt the airwaves.”) Her idea? To give a platform to the voiceless, the nameless, those who go unheard, who’ve disappeared but are not gone. —E.C.
