Nairy Baghramian grew up in Iraq, but left for Germany in 1984, where she’s lived for almost 40 years. Ever since the move, Baghramian has produced sculpture, photographs, and drawings that explore the human body, focusing especially on women’s bodies. Her plasters often resemble limbs—or a protuberance, a cavity, a prosthetic—shapes that highlight anatomical vulnerability. “The work of art is always measured by success,” Baghramian explained in 2021. “Perhaps this is where my close relationship with disappointment and its possibilities lies.” At South London Gallery, Baghramian presents her series “Misfits,” which explores the beauty and endless possibilities of imperfection. —Elena Clavarino
